Search for Missing 5-Year-Old Darius Macdougall in Southern Alberta Enters Third Day
The search for Darius Macdougall, a 5-year-old boy who went missing near Island Lake Campground, south of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, entered its third day on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. RCMP and Alberta Search and Rescue are expanding their efforts across increasingly hazardous terrain.
Circumstances of the Disappearance
Darius was hiking with six family members on Sunday morning when he became separated from them. According to the RCMP, his autism may prevent him from responding to calls, which complicates the search efforts. He was last seen walking with other children near the Island Lake Campground.
Search Efforts and Challenges
Adam Kennedy with Alberta Search and Rescue stated at a press conference that areas typically traveled by children with Darius’s profile have been thoroughly searched. Search crews are now widening the search perimeter and venturing into more dangerous areas, including underwater zones. Over 80 searchers and divers from British Columbia and Alberta have been scouring the area with drones, dogs, and ATVs.
"We are able to put professionally trained searchers on the ground, which will give us a much higher probability of detection per searcher than if we were to use members of the public," said Adam Kennedy.
The search area includes creeks, rivers, beaver dams, and varied terrain, including flat ground and high-angle cliffs, making conditions technically difficult and dangerous.
Description of Darius Macdougall
Darius Macdougall is described as four feet tall with short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a blue-grey hoodie and sweatpants.
Community Involvement and Safety
The local community has been actively engaged online, offering suggestions and support. However, officials are urging the public to stay away from the search area to avoid contaminating the site and to prevent injuries given the treacherous terrain. Police say local groups are helping with supplies, but civilians are asked to leave the search to professionals.
How to Help
Anyone with information about Darius Macdougall’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Crowsnest Pass RCMP at 403-562-2866. Those who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Ongoing Investigation
RCMP say there is no indication of foul play at this time, but all possibilities are being considered. The family is distraught but has been helping in the search.
