Loan Shark Arrested in Malamulele for Illegal Lending, IDs and Bank Cards Seized

By Staff Reporter

MALAMULELE – A 37-year-old man, believed to be a loan shark, has been arrested for allegedly running an illegal money-lending business in contravention of the National Credit Act No. 34 of 2005.

The suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-driven operation on Thursday, 11 September 2025, at around 06:00.

Police discovered 22 identity documents and 42 bank cards, including SASSA pension cards, believed to have been used to exploit vulnerable community members through illegal lending practices.

The man was detained at Saselamani Police Station before being released on R3,000 bail, with strict conditions to appear in the Saselamani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 September 2025.

Police have since warned community members against engaging with unregistered lenders, as such practices are unlawful and often leave borrowers trapped in cycles of debt.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and further charges may be added as the case proceeds.
