Calgary Names New Bridges After Fallen Soldier Cpl. Nathan Hornburg

Two new bridges in Calgary’s northwest have been named in honour of a fallen soldier.

The West Bow Bridges over the Bow River on northwest Stoney Trail off 16 Avenue will bear the name of Cpl. Nathan Hornburg, the province says.

Commemorative signage will be placed in both directions near the bridge to pay tribute to him and to honour the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers who serve at home and abroad.

Hornburg was born in Calgary on June 19, 1983.

He grew up in the city and attended the Calgary Waldorf School, Bishop Carroll High School, and Mount Royal College from 2004 to 2006.

According to Veterans Affairs Canada, Hornburg joined the King’s Own Calgary Regiment in June 2001.

He was killed while serving on a NATO mission in Afghanistan on Sept. 24, 2007, while helping to rescue a disabled tank in Panjwai District, Kandahar.

Rachel Herbert, Hornburg’s sister, hopes the recognition of her brother will remind Calgarians of his sacrifice.

“It’s extraordinary that everyone who drives across this bridge will get to see his name,” she said. “And I hope that every time they see his name, they’ll associate it with the values that Nathan lived and died for.”

Col. Chris Hunt, with the 3rd Canadian Division Headquarters, says Hornburg was an ordinary Canadian who made an extraordinary decision.

“The dedication of the bridge in his name recognizes his sacrifice and inspires our soldiers to be ready to defend Canadian values,” he said.

A bursary was created in Hornburg’s name in 2011.
