Kenny Kunene Cleared in DJ Sumbody Murder Probe, Set for Joburg Mayoral Candidacy

Kenny Kunene Cleared in Probe Linked to DJ Sumbody Murder Case

Kenny Kunene, deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), has been cleared of any wrongdoing following an investigation into his alleged criminal connections with Katiso “KT” Molefe. The investigation was launched after Kunene was found at Molefe’s Sandton home in July when police arrived to arrest the businessman.

The Investigation and Allegations

The probe began after Kenny Kunene's presence at KT Molefe’s residence raised concerns, especially considering Molefe is accused of masterminding the murder of popular South African DJ, Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody. DJ Sumbody was fatally shot in Woodmead in November 2022. This prompted Gayton McKenzie to suspend Kunene from his position as deputy president and to resign as MMC for transport in Johannesburg. Kunene maintained he was at Molefe's house to facilitate a meeting for a journalist from his online publication, Africa Global News, for a potential exclusive story.

Findings of the Forensic Investigation

The forensic investigation report concluded that Kenny Kunene was "truthful" in his explanation that he was accompanying a journalist when he was found at Molefe's home. This led to Kunene being cleared of any involvement in criminal activity related to Katiso “KT” Molefe or the murder of DJ Sumbody.

PA President Gayton McKenzie's Statement

Gayton McKenzie announced the findings of the investigation on Facebook, stating that a law firm had cleared Kunene. McKenzie praised Kunene's leadership and his willingness to step down from his positions during the investigation. McKenzie further stated, "To the DP, you have shown absolute leadership... So, I want to say our DP is back. Die Here is die Here (God is God)."

Kunene's Potential Mayoral Candidacy

Prior to the investigation, McKenzie had announced that Kunene would be the Patriotic Alliance’s mayoral candidate for the City of Johannesburg. McKenzie stated that Kunene had done "very good work" in the city and that the PA would be discussing the mayoral position with him, pending the conclusion of the investigation. With Kunene now cleared, this possibility is back on the table.
