Arsenal Captain Martin Odegaard Sustains Shoulder Injury, Awaiting Further Tests

Martin Odegaard Injury Scare: Arsenal Captain Faces Tests After Nottingham Forest Clash

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard is set to undergo tests on a shoulder injury sustained during the 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. Manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed the injury isn't serious enough to warrant surgery, but the midfielder's availability for upcoming matches is uncertain.

The Injury Incident

Odegaard was forced off the pitch just eight minutes into the game after landing awkwardly on his shoulder. This appears to be a recurrence of a similar injury he suffered against Leeds United last month, which also led to his premature substitution. The injury is a blow to Arsenal ahead of a crucial Champions League fixture against Athletic Club and a Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Arteta's Assessment

In his post-match press conference, Arteta addressed the situation, stating: "I don’t know if it’s exactly the same place, but it’s a very similar injury. He was too uncomfortable to continue." He further added that Odegaard played two games with Norway and expressed hope that the captain would be fit for Tuesday's Champions League match, though he couldn't guarantee it. When asked if the injury would require surgery like Kai Havertz's knee injury, Arteta replied, "No, I don’t think so."

Odegaard's Frustration and Nwaneri's Opportunity

This latest injury will undoubtedly be frustrating for Odegaard, threatening to disrupt his 2025-26 campaign. Just as against Leeds, Ethan Nwaneri replaced Odegaard, and performed well in central midfield. Nwaneri's emergence highlights Arsenal's squad depth.

Saliba's Absence and Mosquera's Performance

William Saliba was absent from the matchday squad despite training on Friday. Arteta explained that Saliba felt he needed a few more days to recover. Cristhian Mosquera, starting in Saliba's place, delivered an excellent performance. Arteta said he didn't want to push Saliba when the player expressed concerns about a quick turnaround.

Looking Ahead

Arsenal face Athletic Club on Tuesday, September 16, in the Champions League. This is followed by a home game against Manchester City on Sunday, September 21. The availability of Martin Odegaard for these crucial fixtures remains uncertain.
