South Africa Demands Release of Activists Detained After Gaza Flotilla Interception

South Africa has demanded the immediate release of activists, including Nkosi Zwelivelile "Mandla" Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela, detained by Israel after its navy intercepted the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters on Wednesday. The incident has sparked international condemnation and further strained relations between South Africa and Israel.

The Interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla

The Global Sumud Flotilla, comprised of humanitarian vessels carrying hundreds of international activists, including Greta Thunberg, was reportedly stopped approximately 70 nautical miles off the Gaza coast. Israeli forces boarded the vessels and redirected them to an Israeli port. The flotilla was transporting essential humanitarian aid intended for Palestinians in Gaza, who face dire conditions due to the ongoing blockade.

Organizers of the flotilla report that ship communications were deliberately damaged to prevent distress calls and live-streams. Contact was then lost with several boats, prompting urgent efforts to account for all participants and crew members. The organizers have described the raid as an illegal attack on unarmed humanitarians.

Ramaphosa's Condemnation and Call for Release

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has strongly condemned the interception of the flotilla. He described it as a violation of international law and a breach of an International Court of Justice (ICJ) order requiring unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza. Ramaphosa has called on Israel to immediately release all detained South Africans and other nationals.

"On behalf of our government and nation, I call on Israel to immediately release the South Africans abducted in international waters, and to release other nationals who have tried to reach Gaza with humanitarian aid...The interception violates the sovereignty of every nation whose flag was flown on the dozens of vessels in the flotilla. It also violates an International Court of Justice injunction that humanitarian aid must be allowed to flow unimpeded." - President Cyril Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa further stated that South Africa supports the call by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Israel to urgently lift the blockade on Gaza and ensure that the life-saving cargo carried by the flotilla reaches the enclave.

Mandla Mandela's Perspective and the Growing Divide

Before joining the flotilla, Mandla Mandela compared the plight of Palestinians under Israeli occupation to apartheid in South Africa. He stated that the experiences in the occupied territories revealed a "far worse form of apartheid" than what South Africans endured.

"Many of us that have visited the occupied territories in Palestine have only come back with one conclusion: that the Palestinians are experiencing a far worse form of apartheid than we ever experienced," Mandla Mandela told Reuters. "We believe that the global community has to continue supporting the Palestinians, just as they stood side-by-side with us."

The incident has ignited a divide among South Africans. Some have criticised Mandela's involvement in the flotilla, while others have praised his bravery and commitment to the Palestinian cause. Some view the situation as repeating history with another Mandela being silenced.

South Africa's Stance and International Implications

The interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla further strains the already tense relations between South Africa and Israel. Pretoria is currently pursuing a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over the war in Gaza. The closure of the Israeli embassy in South Africa could potentially hinder diplomatic efforts to negotiate the release of detained citizens, creating reliance on external sources.
