A gruesome video showing the fatal stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, on a Charlotte light rail train has ignited a national debate about crime in major US cities. The unprovoked attack occurred on August 22nd and is currently being investigated by the FBI.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the stabbing occurred shortly before 10 p.m. after Zarutska boarded the train. Video footage shows the suspect, later identified as Decarlos Brown, 34, attacking Zarutska without provocation. Zarutska, who fled Ukraine in 2022 with her family to escape the war, was remembered in her obituary as someone who "quickly embraced her new life in the United States."

Zarutska worked at Zepeddie’s Pizzeria and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant. The video, obtained by CNN affiliate WCNC, shows Brown pulling out a knife and stabbing Zarutska, who was looking at her phone, approximately four and a half minutes after she boarded the train.

The Suspect: Decarlos Brown

Decarlos Brown, who was homeless at the time of the stabbing, has been charged with first-degree murder. Family members told CNN that Brown has a history of mental health problems, including a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Court records reveal a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for armed robbery, felony larceny, and breaking and entering. He spent more than five years in prison for robbery with a dangerous weapon. His sister, Tracey Brown, stated that after his release, he "didn’t seem like himself" and struggled with hallucinations and paranoia.

"A person that is hearing voices in their head and believes the world is against them, they’re going to break," Tracey Brown told CNN. "And I think that night he broke. I think he had a mental breakdown. I think he just snapped."

WBTV released edited surveillance video footage of the moments leading up to and following the deadly stabbing on the Lynx Blue Line light rail system. The video shows Brown sitting on the rail car before Zarutska boards. It then shows Zarutska entering and sitting down. The edited video excludes the actual stabbing, but shows Brown taking out a pocket knife and gearing up to attack.

The WBTV report details that the attack happened at approximately 9:50 p.m., minutes after Zarutska entered the train at 9:46 p.m. By 9:52 p.m., a bystander was rendering aid. Brown exited the train at the next stop roughly thirty seconds later.
