Inquest Confirms Former Liverpool & Burnley Women's Coach Matt Beard Died by Hanging

Inquest Opened into Death of Former Football Manager Matt Beard

An inquest has been opened into the death of Matt Beard, the former manager of several prominent women's football teams, including Liverpool, Chelsea, and West Ham. He was 47 years old. The inquest began in Ruthin, North Wales, on September 29, 2025, following his death on September 20.

Details from the Inquest Opening

The inquest opening heard that Mr. Beard was found at his home in Deeside, Flintshire, and was subsequently taken to the hospital. Coroner John Gittins stated that paramedics were called to his home and that he was later pronounced dead at Countess of Chester Hospital. The preliminary cause of death was given as hypoxic brain injury, secondary to hanging following an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

The full inquest has been adjourned to a later date to allow for further evidence to be gathered. The football community has expressed deep sorrow and paid tribute to Mr. Beard, recognizing his significant contributions to the sport.

Tributes and Reactions

Following the announcement of Matt Beard's death, tributes poured in from across the football world. His son, Harry Beard, shared emotional memories on social media, highlighting his father's ability to bring joy and urging others struggling with mental health to seek help. One moving post read, "Suicide is never the answer, reach out."

Liverpool FC issued a statement, acknowledging Mr. Beard's commitment, success, integrity, and warmth. Former clubs West Ham and Chelsea also expressed their condolences. England winger Nikita Parris noted that Beard "transformed women's football in England just through sheer wanting to and caring.”

Matt Beard's Legacy in Football

Since his death, a fundraiser organized by Jacqui Oatley to support his family has raised over £50,000. A minute's silence was held before WSL and WSL2 games to honor his memory, and Liverpool's match against Aston Villa was postponed as a mark of respect.
