Grandparents and Mother Sentenced in Murder of Toddler Ethan Ives-Griffiths

Michael Ives, 47, and Kerry Ives, 46, the grandparents of two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths, have been sentenced today at Mold Crown Court for his murder. Shannon Ives, 28, Ethan's mother, was also sentenced for causing or allowing his death and child cruelty. The tragic case stems from events that occurred at their home in Garden City, Flintshire in August 2021.

The Verdicts and Sentencing

In July, after a harrowing trial at Mold Crown Court, a jury found Michael Ives and Kerry Ives guilty of murdering their grandson. Shannon Ives was found guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child and child cruelty. The sentences reflect the severity of the crimes committed against young Ethan.

Prior to the sentencing, Ethan's father, Will Griffiths, addressed the court, expressing the profound pain and anguish his family has endured. He stated he finally felt able to "grieve Ethan knowing the people responsible will be held responsible". He asked the court to "deliver justice" for his son.

The Abuse and Neglect

Ethan Ives-Griffiths died on August 16, 2021, two days after collapsing with a catastrophic brain injury at the Kingsley Road property. The trial revealed the extent of the neglect and abuse Ethan suffered. He was severely underweight and dehydrated, with over 40 visible injuries on his body.

Medical experts testified that Ethan's fatal head injury was caused by a deliberate use of force. He was subjected to "distress, pain and misery" in the weeks leading up to his death. The prosecution argued that Michael and Kerry Ives were directly responsible for the fatal injuries.

Similarities to Logan Mwangi Case

The tragic case of Ethan Ives-Griffiths shares disturbing similarities with the death of five-year-old Logan Mwangi in Bridgend in July 2021. Logan was also subjected to violent attacks and punishments by his mother, stepfather, and a teenage boy.

Both Ethan and Logan were known to social services and had been placed on the child protection register. In both instances, family members reportedly obstructed authorities' attempts to visit and intervene.
