A short while later, the same vehicle was reportedly ordered to stop by Brattleboro police, and later was located on a logging road in Putney, but in each case the occupants managed to flee law enforcement.
A man in the area of Putney reported that he had been assaulted, his home had been burglarized, and his truck stolen a short time later on Monday. That truck was then reportedly seen in Massachusetts and finally stopped by Massachusetts State Police in West Springfield, Massachusetts.
Cabey and French are currently being held in Massachusetts. They are facing charges there, and Vermont authorities said that they expect more charges for the pair “in the near future.”

The incident was originally termed “road rage,” but police later said that the shooting “was not a random act of violence and involved people who knew each other.” The definition of first-degree murder in Vermont law requires the crime to be either premeditated or part of an attempt to commit certain other felonies.
