Vlaams Belang Demands Action Against Deterioration and Insecurity at Geraardsbergen Station

Increased Concerns Over Safety and Loitering at Geraardsbergen Station

Local politicians are raising concerns about a perceived increase in homelessness and substance abuse around the Geraardsbergen Station. Residents report feeling unsafe due to individuals loitering in the station's entrance and stairwells, leading to calls for action from the city government.

Residents Express Fears for Safety

Jana Vanderlinden voiced concerns about the rising feeling of insecurity among residents. "We are seeing a sharp increase in homeless people and substance users around the station," she stated. "They often stay at night in the stairwell of the station, or even in front of the sliding doors to enter the station. This leads to a feeling of insecurity." She further emphasized that "Children and elderly people are afraid of violence, as we have seen several times around the station." Vanderlinden calls on the city government to take measures to address these safety concerns.

Political Opposition Demands Action

Hans De Gent, a leading member of Vlaams Belang, criticized the current administration's response. "In Ninove a new wind is blowing thanks to Forza Ninove. That means that certain people are moving to Geraardsbergen. Our city government could have foreseen that and taken deterrent measures," said De Gent. He added, "But they remain stuck in grandiose announcements, without visible action on the ground. The Geraardsbergen resident deserves better." The party is urging the city to implement proactive measures to prevent the deterioration of the area around the station.

Key Issues Summarized

The core issues revolve around increased loitering, public safety concerns, and perceived inaction by the local government. Vlaams Belang is actively campaigning for solutions to address the problems and alleviate the anxieties of residents.
