Canberra Unveils Detailed Designs for New 2000-Seat Lyric Theatre, Project Reaches Major Milestone

Canberra's Proposed Lyric Theatre: A Modern Masterpiece Takes Shape

New images of Canberra’s proposed 2000-seat Lyric Theatre have been released, showcasing a multi-level modernist building designed to host major productions. The designs, submitted as part of the Works Approval, are now available for public comment.

A Significant Milestone and Design Inspiration

The Works Approval, lodged with the National Capital Authority on September 27th, marks a significant milestone for the project. The detailed designs draw inspiration from Canberra’s iconic natural landmarks, aiming to create a unique and visually stunning performance venue. Community feedback is welcome until October 20th.

Location and Design Highlights

The new theatre will be located on the upper car park north-west of the existing Canberra Theatre Centre, bordering Northbourne Avenue and Vernon Circle. The ACT Government emphasizes the design's integration with the city's cultural district, showcasing views of Black Mountain and Vernon Circle. The aim is to set a new standard for accessibility and artistic experience in the ACT.

The building features bold architecture and large windows, designed to be bathed in natural light during the day and ambient light at night. A spacious northern forecourt will serve as a welcoming public gathering space, and the layered design seeks to balance openness and intimacy.

Inside the Theatre: Capacity and Accessibility

The detailed design includes seating for up to 2000 people across three levels: stalls, dress circle, and balcony. Accessible seating will be available on every level, ensuring equitable access for all patrons. The theatre will also feature more bathrooms than required, including all-gender facilities, and a modern orchestra pit adjustable for various performance sizes.

Government's Vision and Community Input

Chief Minister Andrew Barr, a strong advocate for the project, highlighted the venue's potential to attract world-class performances to the national capital. He emphasized that the design reflects the ACT landscape and incorporates First Nations culture through the use of natural forms and textures.

"Importantly, the detailed design also responds to the needs of the people who will watch performances, the performers who will take the stage, and the staff who will work in the venue, which has been guided by extensive community consultation throughout the planning and design process,"

- Mr. Barr

Mr. Barr further noted that community feedback regarding comfort, views, accessibility, connection to Country, and bathroom facilities has been incorporated into the design. The seating capacity aims to provide the scale and sophistication needed to attract major productions.

Additional Features and Project Timeline

The project includes the construction of a secure loading dock on Theatre Lane, covered by a new land bridge with an active frontage on Vernon Circle. Modern back-of-house facilities and connections with existing venues are also planned.

Multiplex was appointed as the early delivery partner in May, working with a design consortium led by Architectus, Henning Larsen, and Arup. Multiplex will submit a construction proposal by the end of 2025. Site establishment and early works are expected to begin next month, subject to approvals, with main construction starting early next year.

Future Stages of Redevelopment

Future stages of the Canberra Theatre redevelopment project include refurbishment of the existing Canberra Theatre and Playhouse, a new link space between the two and from Civic Square to City Hill, and a new 300-seat Studio Theatre.
