Jeremy Renner addresses his meta “Knives Out 3” casting after “Glass Onion” gag: 'It's hot sauce! It's really good.'
Jeremy Renner already appeared in the Knives Out universe before his Wake Up Dead Man casting by way of hot sauce.
Glass Onion, the second film in Rian Johnson's ongoing series of whodunnits, includes a gag involving a Renner-sponsored hot sauce called "Renning Hot!" It's apparently so spicy that Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc had to shout out Halle Berry's name upon tasting.
This, of course, implies that the actor Jeremy Renner exists in the same Knives Out universe as Dr. Nat Sharp, Renner's character in the upcoming Wake Up Dead Man. Renner addresses this meta-casting in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly out of the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie world premieres.

"I wasn't part of that discussion, but I know it was talked about it," Renner says. "I don't know what they said."

"It's hot sauce!" the Marvel and Mayor of Kingstown star adds. "It's really good. Check it out!"
At the very least, the character of Dr. Nat Sharp is blissfully unaware of the existence of actor Jeremy Renner. "He has no idea who he is," Renner says, noting, "He's a sad doctor. He isn't watching movies, man. He's a sad man. That's the archetype I play: dad in crisis."
Renner was joined at TIFF by Johnson and fellow stars Craig, Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, and Daryl McCormack.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery centers on a religious town where young priest Jud Duplenticy (O'Connor) arrives to assist charismatic firebrand Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Brolin).
While previous Knives Out movies parodied archetypes like the tech billionaire (Edward Norton's Miles Bron in Glass Onion), the 1 percenters (the Thrombey family of Knives Out), and podcast bros (Dave Bautista's Duke Cody in Glass Onion), Kunis describes the archetypes in Wake Up Dead Man as "people that live in small towns where there are more churches than there are people."

Wicks' flock includes devout church lady Martha Delacroix (Close), circumspect groundskeeper Samson Holt (Thomas Haden Church), tightly wound lawyer Vera Draven, Esq. (Washington), aspiring politician Cy Draven (McCormack), the town doctor (Renner), best-selling author Lee Ross (Scott), and concert cellist Simone Vivane (Spaeny).

Kunis plays the local police chief, Geraldine Scott, who calls upon Craig's Benoit Blanc when a seemingly impossible murder rocks the town.

"There's a thing called a 'locked-door mystery,' which is the impossible crime, and that's how the movie kind of starts," Craig teases to EW. "For him, this is like catnip," he adds of Benoit. "The impossible crime is his biggest challenge."
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will hit theaters this Nov. 26 and later on Netflix Dec. 12.
