Dedicated Metro Police Team Deployed on Cape Town's "Hell Run" Highway
A specialized team of 40 metro police officers has been deployed on the N2 highway in Cape Town to combat crime and improve safety for motorists. The 24/7 deployment focuses on the stretch known as the "hell run," a critical gateway to the Western Cape where travelers have been targeted by criminals.
Enhanced Patrols on the N2 Highway
The increased police presence will concentrate on the area near Cape Town International Airport and the Borcherds Quarry precincts. This action responds to previous reports of attacks, including incidents where rocks were thrown at vehicles and stranded motorists were assaulted and robbed.
"The new deployment of 40 metro police officers will enhance our existing enforcement presence and increase safety efforts along the N2 and neighbouring airport and Borcherds Quarry precincts," said mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Technology and Collaboration
In addition to increased patrols, the N2 highway will be monitored using cameras and automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology. Metro police officers are also equipped with dashcam technology to identify stolen vehicles and other traffic violations. This effort will be coordinated with traffic authorities and other police units to maximize effectiveness.
Incidents on the N2 and R300
Data from the past year shows that a significant portion of incidents responded to by metro police on the N2 and R300 highways involve vehicle-related issues. Specifically, 85% of the 2,215 incidents were related to mechanical problems, running out of fuel, or flat tires. The increased patrols aim to address both these issues and the more serious criminal activity.
Restoring a Sense of Safety
Anroux Marais, police oversight and community safety MEC, stated that the additional deployments are expected to significantly "restore a sense of safety on a critical gateway" to the city and province. This deployment is intended to improve the overall experience for travelers and residents alike.
