A doctor, three nurses, a councillor and a police officer were among 66 motorists arrested for drunk driving in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, overnight.
The provincial transport department said this brings the total number of arrests in the area to 110 for the weekend.
The latest arrests follow a sweeping crackdown by the road traffic inspectorate and provincial police, forming part of a province-wide effort to eliminate drunk driving.
Provincial MEC Siboniso Duma expressed dismay at the involvement of public servants, who he said should display understanding of the burden on health systems caused by alcohol-related road accidents.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya: "The total number of drunk driving arrests since 15 August is now 399. Disappointingly, a doctor, three nurses from Port Shepstone Regional Hospital and a councillor are among the 66 motorists arrested. The doctor has been charged for escaping lawful detention. He faces a fine or 6 to 10 years in jail if found guilty."
