Demand Justice Launches Ad Campaign Targeting Coons and Durbin Over Trump Judicial Nominees
Demand Justice, a progressive advocacy group, has announced a six-figure advertising campaign aimed at criticizing Delaware Senator Chris Coons and Illinois Senator Dick Durbin for their support of Trump's judicial nominees. The campaign highlights votes cast by both senators in favor of advancing certain nominees.
Key Vote on Harold Mooty III
Last week, Sen. Coons joined several other Democrats, including Durbin, Amy Klobuchar, Adam Schiff, Peter Welch, and Sheldon Whitehouse, in a vote to advance Harold Mooty III. Mooty is a Trump nominee seeking a federal judgeship on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. This vote moved Mooty's nomination out of the committee.
Mooty's Stance on January 6th
Controversy surrounds Harold Mooty III's nomination due to his refusal to condemn the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. In written responses to the Judiciary Committee, Mooty told Senator Durbin that commenting on what he described as a "political debate" would be "inappropriate."
Demand Justice's Opposition
Demand Justice, along with other liberal groups, has consistently urged Senate Democrats to oppose all of Trump’s judicial nominees. They argue that these selections pose a significant threat to the rule of law and represent a departure from established legal principles. Demand Justice aims to hold Democrats accountable for supporting Trump's judicial agenda.
Leadership and Future Elections
Under the leadership of its new president, Josh Orton, a former aide to Vice President Kamala Harris, Sen. Bernie Sanders, and former Sen. Harry Reid, Demand Justice has vowed to ensure accountability. Senator Durbin, the Senate Judiciary Committee’s top Democrat, will not seek re-election when his term expires in 2026. Senator Coons, who is also up for re-election in 2026, has not yet announced his plans.
