A late-night call to police about a possible break-in in Barrie, Ont., ended with a masked suspect scurrying from the scene.

At approximately 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, the Barrie Police Service responded to a report of suspicious activity at a residence in the area of Sunnidale Road and Oakridge Drive.

Barry Police spokesperson Peter Leon told Global News the homeowner reported hearing noises coming from his garage multiple times and believed someone may have been attempting to break in.

Four officers arrived at the scene to investigate and found the garage door already open; a masked suspect bolted from the scene. However, it wasn’t a person.

Officers confirmed that the intruder was a raccoon that had gained access to the garage.

“Needless to say, the bandit, who was four-legged, ran from the garage and we haven’t had any reports of him since,” said Leon.

Police say they found the furry bandit rummaging through a compost container stored inside and had been helping itself to apples.

No further sightings were reported in the area.

Barrie police are reminding the public to secure all entry and exit ways before turning in for the night. “Don’t ever forget to lock the door from your house into the garage as well… at the end of the day, it’s about keeping everyone safe,” added Leon.
