“We have become aware recently of some online attempts to use the great reputation of Girl Guides as a scam,” Girl Guides of Canada provincial media spokesperson Diamond Isinger told 1130 NewsRadio.
Isinger says the scams are happening on forums like community buy and sell groups on Facebook.
“Unfortunately, we’ve recently noticed a number of online users who have no connection to Girl Guides who are posting online but having cookies in their possession, asking for supporters to send them transfers with no cookies and no ability to actually fulfil orders,” she explained.
Isinger says the best way to get cookie boxes is from a Girl Guide you know or to visit a public booth.
“We encourage people to make sure that they’re making trusted transactions with people that they know, or Girl Guides that they meet at public selling events as the best way to continue supporting girl empowerment near them,” she said.
If one has been scammed, Isinger suggests reporting the incident to police through the non-emergency line.
