Broncos' RB Usage: Sean Payton's Plan for Dobbins, Harvey, and Badie
Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has provided clarity on his running back usage, suggesting a two-back system is likely to be the norm, impacting the roles of J.K. Dobbins, RJ Harvey, and Tyler Badie. The decision to keep Jaleel McLaughlin inactive has sparked some debate.
Payton's Vision: A Two-Back Approach
Sean Payton emphasized his comfort with utilizing two primary running backs, hinting that it will be difficult for more than two backs to get significant carries. “I think the moral of the story always is, I’ve had a lot of experience feeding two, and that’s where the focus is,” Payton said. “It’s hard to feed three.” This strategy places emphasis on the roles of Dobbins and Harvey, while potentially limiting the opportunities for Badie and McLaughlin.
Against the Tennessee Titans, Dobbins and Harvey were the only running backs to receive carries, with Dobbins receiving 16 carries and Harvey receiving 6. Badie was active but didn't get any carries, although he did have two receptions.
Tyler Badie's Role and Skill Set
Tyler Badie’s presence on the active roster, particularly in place of McLaughlin, stems from his abilities in pass protection and the passing game. “He’s a guy that can do a number of things well,” Payton said. “We think he can run well. He’s good in the (blitz) pickups. He’s good in the passing game. You know exactly what you’re getting.” Offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi also noted that Badie is "a little stouter" in protection.
While Badie didn't get any carries against the Titans, he was targeted six times in the passing game, catching two passes for 16 yards. His pass protection skills are considered more refined than McLaughlin’s, especially crucial given the expected pressure from the Indianapolis Colts.
Game Day Decisions and the Colts Matchup
The decision of who is active on game day between Badie and McLaughlin will be an ongoing conversation, according to Lombardi. The Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, known for his aggressive schemes, which puts a premium on pass protection abilities. Payton emphasized the importance of being prepared for exotic looks on both second and third downs.
Fantasy Football Impact
For fantasy football players, Badie could be worth a stash in deep PPR leagues for his pass-catching ability. However, the focus remains on Dobbins and Harvey for carries.
