James Tedesco Withdraws from Kangaroos Ashes Tour, Reece Walsh in Line for Debut
In a significant blow to Kevin Walters' plans, Sydney Roosters captain James Tedesco has ruled himself out of contention for the upcoming Ashes tour against England. This decision opens the door for Brisbane Broncos star Reece Walsh to potentially make his Test debut. Dylan Edwards of the Penrith Panthers is also a strong contender for the fullback position.
Tedesco's Reasons for Withdrawal
Tedesco cited his brother's wedding and a scheduled knee operation as the primary reasons for his withdrawal. He is slated to be the best man at the wedding, which clashes with the tour dates, and requires stem cell treatment on his knee, necessitating a 6-8 week recovery period.
"I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulder that I don't go," Tedesco told the NewsWire, explaining the difficulty of the decision but also a sense of relief.
Peter V'landys, chairman of the ARL Commission, acknowledged Tedesco's professionalism and the agonizing decision he faced. "James was very professional about it; he really agonised over it," said V'landys. He added that he has already informed Kevin Walters of Tedesco's decision.
Walsh and Edwards in Contention
With Tedesco out, the battle for the Kangaroos fullback jersey intensifies between Reece Walsh and incumbent Dylan Edwards. Walsh has been in exceptional form, leading the Broncos to the NRL Grand Final. Edwards, while the current holder of the jersey, has faced increased competition due to Walsh's stellar performances. Walters previously stated that the fullback position is the "most contested position" within the squad.
Other Team Selections and News
Victor Radley has also withdrawn from consideration for the England team. In more positive news for the Kangaroos, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui has committed to playing for Australia, reversing his earlier consideration to represent Samoa. Meanwhile, Stephen Crichton has been ruled out of the Samoan squad due to an ankle injury.
Looking Ahead to the Ashes
The Kangaroos will face England in a three-Test Ashes series, marking the first time the two nations have competed in an Ashes series since 2003. The series kicks off at Wembley Stadium on October 25, followed by matches at Everton Stadium on November 1 and Headingley on November 8.
