Lorry Driver Dies After Timber Load Falls onto M8 Motorway in Glasgow
A lorry driver has tragically died in an accident on the M8 in Glasgow after his load of timber fell from a motorway bridge. The incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 17:30 and resulted in significant road closures and a police investigation.
Details of the Incident
Tom Meikle, 61, from Carnwath, South Lanarkshire, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police Scotland is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the possibility that Mr. Meikle may have suffered a medical episode while driving. The lorry was travelling on the M77 flyover when its load of timber spilled onto the M8 below, near the Plantation interchange.
Dashcam Footage and Aftermath
Dashcam footage circulating on social media captured the moment the wooden beams crashed down onto the motorway, narrowly missing several vehicles. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene. Road closures were in place for nearly 12 hours to allow for a thorough investigation and the removal of the debris.
Police Investigation and Appeal
Sgt Fraser McEwan stated, "Our thoughts are with Mr Meikle's family and friends at this time. Inquiries are ongoing into the cause of the crash, however, one line of enquiry is that Tom took ill within the tractor." He also appealed for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police to come forward and provide information.
