Commanders Consider Reunion with Veteran Pass Rusher Preston Smith
The Washington Commanders are exploring options to bolster their defensive line after a season-ending injury to Deatrich Wise Jr. According to reports, veteran defensive end Preston Smith visited the team on Tuesday, potentially marking a return to where his NFL career began.
Smith's History with Washington
Smith, a former second-round pick by Washington in 2015, spent his first four seasons with the team. While he didn't always meet the high expectations of his draft status, he was a consistent presence, starting every game from 2016 to 2018. His most statistically impressive season with Washington came during his rookie year when he recorded eight sacks and three forced fumbles. He accumulated another 16.5 sacks over the next three seasons.
Smith's Journey Since Leaving Washington
Following his time in Washington, Smith joined the Green Bay Packers in 2019, where he enjoyed a highly productive season, achieving 12 sacks and 23 quarterback hits. He remained a starter for Green Bay through 2023, amassing 25.5 sacks between 2021 and 2023. He played nine games for the Packers in 2024 before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he had a limited role. He finished the season with 32 tackles and 4.5 sacks before being released in February.
Commanders' Need and Potential Role for Smith
With Wise out for the season, the Commanders are looking to add depth to their defensive end position. While newcomers Jacob Martin and Von Miller, alongside Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste, are expected to step up, Smith could provide valuable veteran experience. Smith is known for his run-stopping abilities, a crucial aspect the Commanders are looking to improve. Another defensive lineman, Quinton Jefferson, also visited the team on Tuesday. Jefferson most recently played for the Browns and Bills in 2024.
Other Players Moving Up the Depth Chart
Beyond the potential addition of Smith, several other Commanders players are poised to take on larger roles. Tight end Ben Sinnott could see increased playing time with John Bates likely out due to a groin injury. Rookie right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. will face a tough challenge against the Raiders' pass rush, potentially giving Sinnott more opportunities. On the defensive line, Javontae Jean-Baptiste has also moved up the depth chart following Wise's injury. He will be tested against the Raiders' left tackle, Kolton Miller.
Commanders Look to Rebound Against the Raiders
The Washington Commanders face the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 3 at Northwest Stadium. After a disappointing loss to the Packers, where the defense conceded over 400 yards, the Commanders need a strong performance. Losing Wise is a significant blow, and the team is hoping that a combination of existing players and potential additions like Preston Smith can help fill the void.
