Texas Star Running Back CJ Baxter Injured on First Play, Ruled Out vs. UTEP

CJ Baxter Injury: Texas Longhorns Running Back Out vs. UTEP

Texas running back CJ Baxter, the Longhorns' leading rusher, suffered an injury on the very first play of the game against UTEP and has been ruled out for the remainder of the contest, according to a school spokesman. This is a significant blow to the Texas offense as they are also missing running back Quintrevion Wisner.

Details of the Injury

Baxter, who has accumulated 104 yards on 24 carries this season, limped off the field after his first carry and was able to walk to the locker room under his own power. The extent of the injury is currently unknown, but the Longhorns coaching staff is evaluating the situation.

A History of Injuries for Baxter

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Baxter has faced injury setbacks. As a highly-touted recruit, ranked No. 30 overall in the 2023 ESPN 300, expectations were high for him to contribute significantly to the Texas program. However, in August of 2024, he suffered a torn LCL and PCL in his right leg during practice, requiring season-ending surgery. This injury sidelined him for the entire 2024 season.

Impact on the Texas Offense

The loss of Baxter and Wisner significantly impacts the Texas running back depth. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian will need to rely on other players to step up in their absence. Prior to his injury, Baxter showed considerable promise as a true freshman, sharing the backfield with Jonathon Brooks. In 13 games played, he ran for 659 yards and five touchdowns on 138 carries.

Looking Ahead

The Longhorns will be closely monitoring Baxter's condition, hoping this is not a long-term issue. Texas will play their last nonconference game of the season on Sept. 20 against Sam Houston State. Following that, they will travel to Gainesville for their SEC opener against Florida.
