Mandla Mthembu, once known for his flashy lifestyle and marriage to Khanyi Mbau, has died in New York after suffering a second stroke.
Mthembu and Mbau’s whirlwind romance made headlines before ending in 2009 over cheating, money issues and abuse claims.
Mandla Elliot Mthembu, the flashy businessman and former husband of TV star Khanyi Mbau, has died at the age of 68.
He passed away in a hospital in New York on Sunday evening after suffering a second stroke.
Family spokesperson Karabo Mohlala said: “Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to complications related to the stroke.”
Mthembu had been living in the United States for several years and would have turned 69 on 24 December.
Mthembu became famous in the 2000s as a wealthy businessman and for his controversial relationship with Mbau, who was 29 years younger than him.
At the height of their romance, they lived a life of luxury — staying in a penthouse at the Michelangelo Towers and driving matching yellow Lamborghinis.
He proposed to Mbau in 2006, the same year they had their daughter, Khanukani “Khanz” Mbau. Mbau once said their relationship was “an adventure.”
But by 2009, their marriage had fallen apart due to financial problems, cheating and claims of abuse.
After their split, Mthembu disappeared from the public eye and moved to the US, where he lived quietly until his death.
His family described him as a man with a strong “entrepreneurial spirit” who made a mark on South Africa’s business world and stayed committed to the values of the ANC.
“His legacy will be remembered by many across the country,” said Mohlala.
The family said his body will be brought back to Soweto to be buried at a later date.
