Five people died in a head-on collision on the R518 road in Lephalale, Limpopo.

Six others were injured and taken to hospital, with reckless driving suspected as a cause.

MEC Violet Mathye urged drivers to be patient and avoid reckless behaviour as road safety efforts intensify.

The Limpopo province is once again grappling with the devastating effects of reckless driving, after five people lost their lives in a horrific car accident.

The accident occurred late on Friday, 26 September 2025, along the R518 road in the Lephalale Municipality, Waterberg District.

Initial reports indicate that a sedan apparently overtook and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The drivers of both vehicles died on the scene, together with three female passengers.

Six injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical attention. Law enforcement officers have not ruled out the possibility of reckless driving while awaiting the outcome of formal investigations.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Violet Mathye expressed deep sadness over the tragedy.

“On behalf of the people of Limpopo, I wish to extend our condolences to the families of those who perished and wish the injured a speedy recovery. These are difficult times, and we are comforted by the fact that our Lord will eventually heal the pain,” said MEC Mathye. “Noting that this is a busy weekend due to religious gatherings and family activities, the department will strengthen the visibility of law enforcement officers on our roads. Drivers are urged to avoid reckless driving at all costs and be patient with one another to arrive alive,” she added.

This accident comes just weeks after another fatal crash claimed the lives of six people, including South African music producer DJ Poizen, in Limpopo. That crash left Poizen’s friend, Chymamusique, confined to a wheelchair.
