Sydney Police to Question Gunman After Apartment Shooting
Australian police are preparing to interview a 45-year-old man following a shooting incident in Sydney's inner-west suburb of Croydon Park on Sunday night. The suspect allegedly fired dozens of rounds from an apartment window, critically injuring one person and wounding another. Authorities have described the event as a "random and shocking" act.
Details of the Shooting
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. local time when the suspect reportedly opened fire with a .30-calibre rifle from his apartment. Acting Superintendent Stephen Parry of New South Wales Police stated that the gunman fired up to 50 shots, causing residents to seek shelter. The police were able to subdue and arrest him without further casualties.
“It is incredible that nobody died,” Parry told reporters, highlighting the severity of the situation. Police have indicated that there is no apparent connection to organised crime or terrorism.
Casualties and Response
Two individuals were taken to hospital, with one undergoing emergency surgery and remaining in critical condition. Ambulance crews treated 14 others at the scene for shock and minor injuries. The swift response of local officers was praised for potentially preventing further tragedy.
“This was an extremely dangerous and volatile situation,” Parry said, emphasizing the importance of the first responders' actions.
Investigation and Suspect Assessment
The suspect is currently being evaluated for physical and mental health issues. According to Parry, he has minimal prior contact with police over the last two decades and "no recorded mental health history." He is expected to face multiple firearms-related charges.
Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the attack. A police spokesperson told Reuters that, "At this point, there is nothing to suggest any terror or religious motives."
Community Impact
The shooting has left bullet holes across nearby buildings and shattered windows, unsettling residents of Croydon Park. Many were forced to stay indoors as police established a lockdown in the area.
The investigation is ongoing as police continue to gather information and assess the suspect's motivations.
