teamLab Biovortex Kyoto: Japan's Largest Immersive Art Experience Opens
The internationally acclaimed art collective, teamLab, has opened its newest permanent exhibition, teamLab Biovortex Kyoto, on October 7th, 2025. Located near JR Kyoto Station in Minami-ku, Kyoto, this expansive museum is the largest of its kind in Japan, showcasing over 50 immersive artworks across 10,000 square meters.
A New Hub for Art and Culture
teamLab Biovortex Kyoto is part of the larger Kyoto Station Southeast Area Project, an initiative aimed at transforming the area into a vibrant hub for art, culture, and youth engagement. The project is a collaboration with several Osaka- and Kyoto-based companies and aims to support Kyoto City's urban development vision.
According to teamLab founder, Mr. Toshiyuki Inoko, the artworks featured “transcend the conventional idea of objects that people have” and challenge what modern society “considers as lasting or permanent.” He hopes visitors will "experience a new kind of existence and expand their perceptions" after visiting the exhibition.
Immersive Artworks and Sensory Experiences
The exhibition features a diverse range of installations that utilize light, perception, sound, and space to create immersive environments for visitors. Among the highlights is Massless Amorphous Sculpture, an installation making its debut in Japan. This artwork consists of vast clouds of soap bubbles that hover midair, inviting visitors to touch and walk through them, altering their form and movement.
Other notable installations include Megaliths, Transient Abstract Life and Return, Ephemeral Crystallized Rain, and Massless Suns And Dark Suns. These works explore themes of perception, transience, and the interplay between humans and their environment.
Interactive and Educational Zones
teamLab Biovortex Kyoto also features interactive zones designed for families and visitors of all ages. Athletics Forest is a dynamic play area filled with light projections, soundscapes, and physical challenges, including balance beams, trampolines, and slides. Future Park offers a collaborative space for co-creation, while Sketch Factory allows visitors to turn their digital creations into tangible souvenirs.
