Derek Carr Opens Door to Potential NFL Comeback After Retirement
Months after announcing his retirement and forfeiting a significant portion of his contract, former NFL quarterback Derek Carr has hinted at a possible return to the league. The 34-year-old made the comments during an interview, leaving fans and analysts speculating about his future.
Carr's Comments on a Potential Return
Carr, who recently served as an NFL analyst for a YouTube broadcast, stated, "I wouldn’t say never," when asked about the possibility of a comeback. He emphasized his ongoing training regimen, explaining, "I’m training because I love to train. That’s going to be the rest of my life." However, he added a note of caution, stating, "Right now, today, I’m not coming back."
The Circumstances of Carr's Retirement
Carr's retirement in May came as a surprise to many, particularly given his decision to forgo a $30 million fully guaranteed salary for 2025. He chose this option rather than undergoing shoulder surgery. He explained that he still throws a football for fun with his children and as part of his shoulder rehabilitation.
The Saints' Quarterback Situation
Carr's departure has left the New Orleans Saints with a quarterback dilemma. The team is currently relying on fifth-round pick Spencer Rattler after rookie Tyler Shough failed to secure the starting position. The Saints lost their season opener to the Cardinals, with Rattler completing 27 of 46 passes for 214 yards.
Contradictory Statements and Doubts
Some analysts have pointed to Carr's history of making seemingly contradictory statements. He has stated he would retire rather than play for another team other than the Raiders, but then played for the Saints. His injury history with the Saints resulted in only 27 games before his retirement. The comments on The Dan Patrick Show where he says he's ready, but won't come back, seems to be in the same vein.
Carr's Post-NFL Activities
Prior to his injury last season, Carr threw for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 10 games. He is a four-time Pro Bowler. Beyond his analyst role, Carr has launched a YouTube channel and hosts a podcast with his brother, former No. 1 overall pick David Carr. He also coaches a youth football team.
Future Outlook
While Carr emphasizes that he is not currently planning a return, his "never say never" approach leaves the door open for a possible comeback. Whether his shoulder injury and post NFL career ventures will change that remains to be seen.
