Indonesia School Collapse Death Toll Rises to 54; Investigation Underway Amid Poor Construction Suspicions

Indonesia School Collapse: Death Toll Climbs to 54

The tragic collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic boarding school in East Java, Indonesia has resulted in a confirmed death toll of 54. Rescue operations have concluded, with authorities now investigating the cause of the devastating incident that occurred on September 29, 2025.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

A joint team of rescuers worked tirelessly to recover victims from the rubble in Sidoarjo Regency. In total, 157 people were found, including 104 survivors. The search focused on the northern area of the site, with heavy machinery employed after no further signs of life were detected.

Yudhi Bramantyo, an official from the search and rescue agency (Basarnas), confirmed the grim discovery of bodies and body parts. Efforts were hampered by the way the building had collapsed, leaving narrow voids for rescuers to maneuver in. Families consented to the use of heavy equipment after the initial 72-hour window for potential survival had passed.

Investigation into the Collapse

Authorities have initiated a probe to determine the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest poor construction practices and the lack of proper permits for the school building may have been contributing factors. Some officials have indicated that the two-story building caved in due to an unstable foundation. Construction experts also said students should not have been allowed inside a building under construction. Subandi, Sidoarjo district’s chief, confirmed the school's management had not applied for the required permit before starting construction.

Budi Irawan, a deputy at the disaster mitigation agency (BNPB), stated that this is the deadliest disaster in Indonesia in 2025. He also noted the incident has raised concerns about building safety and lax construction standards throughout Indonesia.

Account from a Survivor

Muhammad Rijalul Qoib, a 13-year-old survivor, recounted hearing the sound of falling rocks before the collapse. Although he managed to escape, he was wounded by falling debris. Survivors gave harrowing accounts of their escapes to local media outlets.

Legal Implications

While no arrests have been made, individuals involved in the school's construction, particularly those accused of using substandard materials, may face serious charges under Indonesian law. Penalties could potentially include imprisonment, significant fines, and even the death sentence if negligence directly contributed to the deaths.
