President Donald Trump promised Arab leaders Tuesday he would not allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the West Bank, Politico Wednesday.
He said during a closed-door discussion with Arab countries that he would prevent Israel from absorbing the area, according to the news outlet, which cited six people familiar with the meeting.
Two of those people reportedly described Trump as being firm on the matter. Politico reported two others as saying Trump and his team presented a written outline on his administration’s plan to end the war in Gaza. The plan included Trump's promise and other details related to governance and postwar security, according to the outlet.
The Wall Street Journal last month that plans for Gaza after the war include options for economic assistance and the area’s stabilization and governance. Trump has also expressed indifference to Israel’s plan to control Gaza, though. He said on Aug. 5 it was “pretty much up to Israel” to occupy the area.
The president has expressed support for ending the war as well, telling the United Nations on Tuesday there needs to at least be a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
“We have got to come together, and we will come together, gotta get it done. We have to stop the war in Gaza immediately, we have to stop it, we have to get it done,” Trump noted. “We have to negotiate, immediately, have to negotiate peace.”
Israel and Hamas have both rejected multiple offers for a ceasefire. The president criticized the militant organization for doing so, as well as countries which have recognized a Palestinian state.
“The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists for their atrocities. This would be a reward for these horrible atrocities, including October 7, even while they refuse to release the hostages or accept a ceasefire, instead of giving to Hamas and giving so much, because they've taken so much, they have taken so much,” Trump said.
“This could have been solved so long ago, but instead of giving in to Hamas’s ransom demands, those who want peace should be united with one message: Release the hostages now. Just release the hostages now,” the president continued.
The war is approaching its two-year mark from when Hamas invaded Israel, on Oct. 7, 2023, and killed roughly 1,200 people while taking hundreds of hostages. Twenty living hostages reportedly remain in Hamas's custody, along with the bodies of dozens of others.
