Berwyn Police reported hearing gunfire around 4:05 p.m. on Tuesday near the school, located at 6432 16th St. Upon arrival, officers found a man firing a rifle into another vehicle. As officers approached, the suspect fired at them before allegedly taking his own life. Two other individuals inside the targeted vehicle were also found dead.

According to Berwyn North School District 98 Supt. Michelle Smith, the gunman shot himself after killing two people in the car, one of whom was Assistant Principal Nerissa Lee. Police stated that officers took cover and did not return fire during the incident.

The news of the shooting has shaken the Berwyn community. "You don't expect that from a small town like this in Berwyn, and it's kind of scary to just think about it, because it happened right in front of school," said Abraham Pulido, a local resident.
