Jakarta, October 3 (VNA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs announced on October 3 that it has temporarily suspended the Electronic System Operator Registration Certificate (TDPSE) of TikTok Pte. Ltd. after the platform failed to provide complete data on its live streaming activities during nationwide protests in late August.
In its statement, the ministry said that some accounts with ties to online gambling activities used TikTok's live stream feature during national protests from late August to September and monetised it.
During this period, TikTok temporarily suspended its live feature, saying this was intended to keep it a safe and civil space.
The Indonesian Government subsequently asked the company for its traffic, streaming and monetisation data. However, the company, owned by China's ByteDance, only provided partial data, citing its internal procedures.
Therefore, the ministry deemed TikTok to have violated its obligations as a private electronic provider, and suspended its registration, said Alexander Sabar, an official from the ministry.
Indonesia’s current law states every company that has signed up to the country’s licensing rules must hand over its data to the government for the purpose of supervision or risk being blocked.
TikTok, which has more than 100 million accounts based in Indonesia, did not respond to this statement./.
