Venezuela Warns US of Alleged Extremist Plot Against Closed Caracas Embassy Amid Tensions

Venezuela’s government has warned of an alleged plot by extremist groups to attack the closed U.S. Embassy in Caracas with explosives, amid ongoing tensions between Caracas and Washington over U.S. military operations targeting drug trafficking in the Caribbean.

National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez on Sunday said authorities had alerted the United States “through three different channels” about a “false-flag operation” planned by “extremist sectors of the local right.”

In a televised interview late Monday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said two reliable sources had informed the government of the possible attack. In response, additional security forces were sent to the embassy.

Maduro added the government was looking to capture those involved in the plot.

The embassy has been closed since 2019, when Washington severed ties with Maduro’s government.

The U.S. State Department did not immediately comment on the report.

The Venezuelan government’s warning follows weeks of Venezuelan criticism of U.S. naval operations in the Caribbean.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Friday that American forces struck a small vessel in the region, killing four “narcoterrorists.” The latest strike marks the fourth operation in the campaign against drug cartels, with at least 21 people killed in total.
