Will Vest Shines for the Tigers, Secures 21st Save
Will Vest had a strong week for the Detroit Tigers, contributing both in a save situation and in relief. His performance helped the Tigers secure a win against the Miami Marlins, showcasing his value as a reliable closer.
Vest Earns Save Against the Marlins
On Sunday, Will Vest earned his 21st save of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. Vest pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one batter. He managed to escape a jam with runners on first and second and only one out, successfully closing out the game for the Tigers. This was his first save since August 29th.
Dominant Performance Lowers ERA
Vest's recent performances have been impressive. He has delivered 6.1 consecutive scoreless innings. His strong outings have lowered his season ERA from 2.81 to an impressive 2.53. Through 64 innings, Vest has recorded 67 strikeouts and only 22 walks, demonstrating a good strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Relief Appearance in Extra-Innings Loss
Prior to his save, Vest also pitched in Saturday's 6-4, extra-innings loss to the Marlins. He covered two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one. Vest worked the ninth and tenth innings to keep the game tied. However, Rafael Montero allowed three runs in the bottom of the 11th inning, resulting in a loss for the Tigers.
Vest's Role as Closer
Despite the Tigers' struggles in September (4-7 record), Will Vest has maintained a solid 2.57 ERA and a 9.4 K/9 rate. With Kyle Finnegan on the injured list due to a groin injury, Vest should continue to serve as Detroit's closer. His recent performances certainly strengthen his case.
