Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Probed Over Alleged Links to Underworld Figure

Ekurhuleni Investigates Allegations Against Metro Police Deputy Chief

The City of Ekurhuleni has launched an investigation into allegations that Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi extended undue favors to Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, an alleged underworld figure. The investigation follows concerns raised about potential corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

Allegations of Special Treatment

Mkhwanazi is accused of providing Matlala with special treatment, including equipping the alleged crime boss's personal vehicles with blue lights. This has raised concerns about the integrity of the EMPD and the potential compromise of law enforcement operations within Ekurhuleni.

  • Allegations include supplying blue lights to Matlala's personal vehicles.
  • Mkhwanazi was previously suspended but reinstated and promoted.

Council Involvement and Madlanga Commission

Last week, the Ekurhuleni council referred the matter to the city manager after Mkhwanazi was implicated at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry for his alleged links to Matlala. Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza has stated that the city manager will soon announce a decision regarding the allegations against the EMPD's deputy chief.

Special Leave and Prior Suspension

Mkhwanazi was granted special leave after being implicated at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry over his alleged ties to Matlala. He had previously been suspended following claims that he supplied Matlala with EMPD blue lights, but was later reinstated and subsequently promoted.

Mayor's Response and Investigation

Mayor Xhakaza has assured the public that the metro is not ignoring the allegations of criminal infiltration within the EMPD. He commissioned an investigation through the acting city manager, expressing confidence that the commission will shed light on the alleged corruption. The allegations of criminal infiltration were initially raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi during his testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Ongoing Investigation and Future Hearings

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is set to resume hearings into claims of wider corruption within the justice system on Monday. The outcome of these hearings and the internal investigation within the City of Ekurhuleni will determine the future of Julius Mkhwanazi and potentially reveal the extent of criminal influence within the EMPD. The investigation aims to restore public trust and ensure the integrity of law enforcement in Ekurhuleni.
