Australian Deputy PM Marles Confirms No Immediate Albanese-Trump Meeting; US President Criticized Over Paracetamol Claims

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says he has no doubt that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Donald Trump will have a face-to-face meeting “in the not-too-distant future.”

Speaking at a press conference in Launceston, Tasmania, Marles said the lack of a meeting was not because of Australia’s decision to recognise Palestine.

“As I say, the relationship between Australia and the United States is in a good place,” Marles said.

“The government has taken a position in respect of the recognition of Palestine, which recognises the legitimate aspiration of the Palestinian people to statehood. It’s entirely consistent with positions that have been held by successive governments - Labor and Coalition - over many decades, in support of a two-state solution.”

Asked about Sussan Ley’s letter to US Republicans, Marles said “we would hope that, in respect of foreign policy, Australia speaks with one voice.”

“Obviously the opposition has its right to have its view. It is another step, indeed, to start writing to representatives of countries abroad, but that is ultimately a matter for the opposition.”
