Max Pacioretty Retires from NHL, Joins University of Michigan

After a distinguished 17-year career in the National Hockey League (NHL), Max Pacioretty has announced his retirement. The former captain of the Montreal Canadiens is transitioning into a new role as a special assistant to head coach Brandon Naurato at the University of Michigan.

A New Chapter at Michigan

Pacioretty, age 36, expressed his enthusiasm for his new position: "After 17 seasons in the NHL, I’m excited to begin this next chapter with Michigan Hockey. I’m so thankful for the teammates, coaches and fans who have been a part of my journey. Hockey has given me so much, and now I have the opportunity to help develop the next generation of players. Michigan has a tradition of producing elite talent, and I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned to help these guys grow on and off the ice."

NHL Career Highlights

Drafted 22nd overall by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007, Pacioretty played 939 regular season games, accumulating 681 points. He represented several teams throughout his career, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He captained the Canadiens for three seasons, scoring 226 of his 335 career goals with the team and helped the team reach the Eastern Conference Final in both 2009 and 2014.

Resilience and Determination

Pacioretty's longevity in the NHL is a testament to his resilience, particularly after overcoming two ruptured Achilles tendons during his time with the Carolina Hurricanes. Despite not achieving his ultimate goal of winning a Stanley Cup, he consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment and perseverance throughout his career.

Naurato's Perspective

Brandon Naurato emphasized the value of Pacioretty's experience: "Bringing in a guy like Max is huge for us. He’s been through it all in the NHL and knows what it takes to play and lead at the highest level. Our players are going to learn a ton from the way he sees the game, how he prepares and how he carries himself. It’s exciting to have that kind of experience around every day. Having an alum like Max back around the program reminds our players that they’re part of something bigger, and that’s the Michigan Hockey legacy."

Bill Masterton Trophy

In 2012, Pacioretty was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy, recognizing his perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey after recovering from a severe concussion and fractured vertebra sustained following a hit by Zdeno Chara.

Impact on the University of Michigan

Pacioretty's presence at the University of Michigan is expected to have a significant impact, providing a model of resilience, leadership, and professionalism for student-athletes. His experience will be invaluable in preparing them for the challenges of both hockey and life beyond the sport.
