Lier expands innovative Dutch language programs for newcomers, fostering integration through creative activities

Lier Expands Language Learning Opportunities for Newcomers with Creative Initiatives

The city of Lier, in collaboration with Ligo and dedicated volunteers, is expanding its language learning opportunities for newcomers. These initiatives aim to provide a supportive and engaging environment where non-native speakers can improve their Dutch language skills through creative activities.

"Babbel in Actie": Learning Dutch Through Creativity

Joke Van Den Bulck of the city of Lier's Integration Department highlighted the importance of these programs. She stated, "We are proud to show here in the Beeldacademie what these types of initiatives mean for the target group. By doing fun and creative activities together, non-native speakers practice their Dutch in a spontaneous way. A warm welcome with coffee and cookies ensures that they feel safe." The program, known as Babbel in Actie, allows adults to learn Dutch through activities such as crafting, singing, and movement.

Ligo teacher Heleen explained that Babbelplezier and Soep met Babbels were already launched in the previous two school years. Babbelplezier arose as an accessible alternative to the classic conversation group Babbelier. Soep met Babbels teaches new words while cooking. Babbel in Actie takes a broader approach, incorporating various creative activities.

Building Confidence and Community

The city council expresses satisfaction with the expansion of these initiatives. Alderman for Integration Annemie Goris (N-VA) emphasized that Lier has consciously invested in initiatives for the weakest language learners. These programs provide a welcoming space for absolute beginners.

Brazilian participants Darlieson e Sousa Ferreira and José Arimatéia Ferreira de Sousa attest to the program's effectiveness. Darlieson explained that Babbelplezier has helped them practice Dutch after moving from Ireland to Lier. "It is important for us to speak good Dutch."

"Through these activities, we gain more self-confidence. I am naturally very closed, but thanks to the conversations, I am learning to be social." - José, Participant

A Broad Range of Language Learning Opportunities

Lier offers a comprehensive network of language practice opportunities. Beginners can choose from Babbel in Actie, Babbelplezier, or Soep met Babbels. Those with some existing knowledge can participate in the Babbelier conversation group or find a Dutch-speaking buddy through Samen Inburgeren or the Parlangi online platform. The new program "Ouders op School" brings together non-native speaking parents at their children's schools to enhance language skills and involvement.

Joke Van den Bulck added, "With this broad range, we now reach all groups of language learners, from absolute beginners to advanced learners. We feel it is important to continue to invest so that non-native speakers can expand their network and fully participate in society." The Lier language practice opportunities are made possible thanks to Flemish resources from the Plan Samenleven and financial support from Europa WSE.
