Giant Warns of US Shipment Delays Following Forced Labor Allegations
Giant, the world's largest bicycle manufacturer, has issued a warning regarding potential delays in shipments to the United States. This comes after US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced a ban on imports of Giant bikes, parts, and accessories manufactured in Taiwan, citing unspecified forced labor accusations.
CBP Investigation and Allegations
The CBP order, issued on Wednesday, follows an investigation into Giant's Taiwanese operations. The agency claims to have found indicators of forced labor, including abuse of vulnerability, abusive working and living conditions, debt bondage, withholding of wages, and excessive overtime. However, CBP has not yet provided specific details or evidence supporting these allegations.
According to a CBP statement, "Giant profited by imposing such abuse, resulting in goods produced below market value and undercutting American businesses by millions of dollars in unjustly earned profits."
Giant's Response and Commitment
Giant has stated that it was not previously aware of any US probe and will file a petition to seek the revocation of the import ban. Ken Li, Giant Group’s spokesperson, told CNN, "As far as we are aware, there have not been investigations, interviews, site visits, or formal requests for information from the US authorities... At this stage, we have not yet had direct engagement with them."
"Giant Group is firmly committed to upholding human rights and labor protections," the company said in a statement. They added that they have established internal mechanisms and third-party audits to ensure compliance with international standards.
Impact and Broader Context
Giant anticipates short-term delays in some shipments to the US while it activates contingency measures. While Giant operates manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Netherlands and Hungary, the ban only affects shipments originating from Taiwan.
The order comes amidst ongoing tariff negotiations and tensions between Taiwan and the United States. While a Giant spokesman declined to speculate on whether the CBP order was related to these negotiations, the situation adds another layer of complexity to the bilateral relationship.
Taiwan's Response and Industry Context
Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs has stated it will coordinate with the Labor Ministry to assist Giant in addressing the issue. Taiwan, known for its advanced economy and high-tech manufacturing, has seen increasing reliance on migrant workers in certain sectors, with past reports of labor abuses in industries like fishing.
