A Singaporean social media influencer, Genie Yamaguchi, 30, has been sentenced to a three-month Day Reporting Order (DRO) after pleading guilty to shoplifting nearly $629 worth of goods from the Don Don Donki supermarket in Orchard Central. The sentence was handed down on Tuesday, September 23rd.
Details of the Offense and Sentence
Yamaguchi, whose social media account with 14,800 followers has since been removed, admitted to one count of theft. As part of her DRO, she is subject to a curfew between 10 PM and 6 AM and is required to wear an electronic tracker. The sentence was determined at the State Courts in Singapore.
The Shoplifting Incident
The incident occurred on August 25, 2024, at approximately 2:30 AM. Yamaguchi and her friend, Li Xueqi, 29, were observed pushing a shopping cart through the Orchard Central outlet of Don Don Donki. They allegedly placed 27 items, including cosmetics, skincare products, clothing, and handbags, into the cart without paying.
- Among the stolen items were two cups valued at $25.90 each.
- Three bottles of brightening lotion, totaling $63.
- Three packets of instant pasta, valued at $12.10 each.
The total value of the stolen goods amounted to $628.90. Security footage confirmed the incident after a staff member alerted the manager on duty.
Legal Proceedings and Aftermath
According to court documents, Li Xueqi left the supermarket before Yamaguchi, and they later met in the parking lot. The police arrested Yamaguchi on September 3rd, recovering only nine of the stolen items. Both women expressed their willingness to compensate for the losses.
The prosecution noted that Yamaguchi had no prior criminal record and requested an assessment for her suitability for a Day Reporting Order. Her lawyer did not object to this request and confirmed that she had already made restitution for the stolen goods.
Yamaguchi's lawyer stated in court that she is remorseful for her actions and has pledged not to repeat the offense.
Li Xueqi is facing separate theft charges, and her case is currently ongoing.
