Semitrailer Crash on I-70 Shuts Down Major Golden Roads, Injures Driver, Causes Diesel Spill

Traffic Delays in Golden, Colorado Following Semitrailer Crash on I-70 and US-6

A serious crash involving a semitrailer caused significant traffic delays on major roadways in Golden, Colorado on Thursday, October 2, 2025. The incident occurred on eastbound Interstate 70 (I-70) and impacted U.S. Highway 6 (US-6). Authorities urged drivers to seek alternate routes.

Crash Details and Road Closures

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the eastbound lanes of I-70 were temporarily closed but have since reopened. However, Exit 216 off eastbound I-70 remains closed for cleanup. Initially, all lanes of eastbound U.S. 6 were closed, but have since reopened as of 9 p.m., though the left lane of westbound U.S. 6 remains closed. The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m.

A Colorado State Patrol spokesperson reported that a semitrailer hauling gravel went over the rail on I-70 and landed on U.S. 6 below. This resulted in a “significant” diesel fuel and gravel spill, requiring hazardous materials cleanup. Traffic on U.S. 6 between Johnson Road and Indiana Street was diverted.

Investigation and Injuries

The Golden Police Department stated that the preliminary investigation suggests the semitrailer collided with another vehicle on I-70 before leaving the roadway and crashing down onto U.S. 6 at the bridge overpass. The truck came to rest in the center median of U.S. 6, blocking all lanes.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was uninjured, while the driver of the semitrailer was transported to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. FOX31's Carly Moore reported that traffic was also backed up on C-470 due to the closures.

Traffic Updates and Alternate Routes

While I-70 is fully open, drivers are advised to expect delays in the area. Until cleanup is complete, the public should consider alternate routes such as Colfax Avenue or Highway 50, as suggested by police. The crash is under investigation by law enforcement and first responders remain on the scene.
