Ill health forced Robert Fico to miss key Brussels discussions and a planned meeting with Germany’s new chancellor in Denmark.
Slovakia’s prime minister Robert Fico canceled his trip to the informal European Council summit in Copenhagen on Wednesday, October 1st, citing health problems linked to last year’s assassination attempt.
Passengers had already boarded the government plane when departure was repeatedly delayed, before being canceled completely.
Government spokesperson Alexander Kováč confirmed Fico’s absence but provided no further details on his condition. Earlier in the day, Fico had participated in a cabinet meeting.
In Copenhagen, he was scheduled to attend the summit and hold his first bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz since Merz took office.
