17 African Nations Join World Bank-AfDB's Mission 300 to Electrify 300 Million by 2030

(Business in Cameroon) - The African Development Bank (AfDB) announced yesterday that 17 African countries, including Cameroon, have joined Mission 300, an initiative led by the World Bank and the AfDB to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.

Cameroon and its peers formalized their participation by signing national energy pacts, described by the AfDB as “practical blueprints that guide public spending, trigger reforms, and attract private capital”.

“The government of the Republic of Cameroon is committed, through its Energy Compact, to a determined transition towards renewable energies, promoting inclusive universal access and sustainable development based on partnerships and ambitious reforms to build a low-carbon future,” President Paul Biya was quoted as saying by the AfDB.

National energy pacts form the backbone of Mission 300. According to the AfDB, they were designed and endorsed by governments with technical support from development partners and are tailored to each country’s context. They focus on three main areas: infrastructure, financing, and policy.

Since Mission 300 was launched, 30 million people in Africa have already gained access to electricity, and more than 100 million are in the pipeline for connection.
