Will 'The Penguin' Get a Season 2?
The Batman nemesis the Penguin has had no shortage of iterations. Actors Burgess Meredith, Danny DeVito, and Robin Lord Taylor have all inhabited the tuxes and tails of Gotham’s criminal birdman, not to mention more voice actors that you could shake an umbrella at across the animated Bat-verse, but perhaps none have achieved the level of critical success in the role as the latest member of the rogue’s gallery—Colin Farrell.
After debuting in 2022’s The Batman, Farrell’s seedy Gotham mobster Oswald “Oz” Cobb has garnered some serious accolades in his titular HBO Max solo series, The Penguin. The series, which boasts an impressive 95% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, received 24 nominations at the 2025 Emmys—second in volume only behind the Apple hit Severance—not to mention Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award wins for Farrell. Naturally, all of this success, has plenty of fans wondering what the future holds for the character.
Here’s what we know so far about a possible second season of The Penguin:
Farrell’s unsure about a season 2
Generally speaking, a TV show that manages to become a hit with both audiences and critics would seem to be a shoe-in for additional seasons—especially one based on a long-running comicbook character. However, the chances of another outing for the Penguin look murky at best, based on Farrell’s own assessment.

“I have no idea if it’s happening,” the actor told Deadline this month. “I know that I heard rumblings that they were thinking they’d like to do a second season, but I don’t know if it’s a good idea. I don’t know the way you go back to the trough … And part of me wants to go, ‘Just let it go people. We got away with it. Leave it as it is.’
On the other hand, it seems that he hasn’t entirely ruled out the possibility either; it would simply depend on the script.
“Look, if they came up with a fantastic idea or something like that, of course I’d be open to it,” Farrell said.
This would seem in keeping with previous awards season indications, as The Penguin has consistently competed as a limited series, rather than the ongoing drama category. Of course, if they did get a surprise pickup, they wouldn’t be the first hit series to make the transition—Shōgun was famously crafted as a one-season standalone before its massive success led to the show being picked up for two additional seasons.
Penguin will appear in The Batman 2
Though Oz Cobb’s television career may have come to an end, in keeping with the frequent Arkham Asylum escapee’s history, we haven’t seen the last of Farrell’s performance. While no specific plot details have been shared yet, the actor has confirmed that he will appear in the forthcoming The Batman sequel from director Matt Reeves.

“I haven’t got much to do on it, just a little bit,” Farrell explained. “I read the script and it’s extraordinary.”
With The Batman 2 currently set for theatrical release on October 1, 2027, it’s looking like a long wait ahead for Penguin fans.
