Desperate Search Continues for Missing Boy August "Gus" Lamont in South Australia
A frantic search is underway for four-year-old August "Gus" Lamont, who disappeared on Saturday from a remote sheep station in South Australia's Mid North, near Yunta. The search has now entered its fourth day, with police and community members tirelessly working to find the missing boy.
The Disappearance
Gus was last seen around 5 pm on Saturday, September 27th, playing in the sandpit at his family's homestead, located approximately 40 kilometers south of Yunta. When his grandmother returned, he was gone, sparking an immediate search of the 60sqkm property. The area is described as isolated with outback-like conditions and dense scrub, adding to the complexity of the search.
Family's Plea
A statement was released on behalf of Gus's family expressing their devastation and unwavering hope for his safe return. "We are devastated by the disappearance of our beloved Gus on Saturday afternoon," the statement read. "This has come as a shock to our family and friends, and we are struggling to comprehend what has happened. Gus's absence is felt in all of us, and we miss him more than words can express. Our hearts are aching, and we are holding onto hope that he will be found and returned to us safely." The family also expressed gratitude to the South Australia Police, emergency services, community members, neighbors, and friends assisting in the search.
Extensive Search Efforts
South Australia Police are "throwing everything" at the search, deploying over 100 personnel, including officers, SES crews, volunteers, drones, helicopters, dogs, horses, police divers, and aircraft. Despite the comprehensive effort, search teams face significant challenges, including the vastness of the property and the lack of a clear direction of travel for Gus. Sniffer dogs have been unable to pick up a scent. Water Operations Police have searched dams and tanks on the property.
Details About Gus
August "Gus" Lamont is described as Caucasian with long, curly blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a grey sun hat, a cobalt blue T-shirt with a yellow Minion character on the front, light grey long pants, and boots. The family has declined to release an image of him. Despite temperatures dropping to as low as six degrees Celsius during the nights, searchers remain hopeful that Gus has found shelter.
Ongoing Investigation
Police do not believe Gus's disappearance is suspicious. "We're not following that line of inquiry at this stage," said Police Commissioner Grant Stevens. The search continues, with crews working day and night to locate Gus and bring him home safely.
