Theo Von Reveals Drug Addiction Recovery Secret to IShowSpeed: 12 Pieces of Gum
Theo Von recently revealed to IShowSpeed that he chews 12 pieces of gum at once as a coping mechanism for his past struggles with drug addiction. The surprising revelation came during a meeting between the two personalities in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
IShowSpeed's Shocked Reaction
During their meeting, IShowSpeed noticed Theo Von chewing a substantial amount of gum. After asking about it, Von explained that he consumes so much gum as a method to manage his recovery from drug addiction. He stated, "I got 12 pieces in right now... No, I'm a drug addict—a recovered drug addict. So if I'm gonna put it in, I'm gonna put it, you know, I like to do it."
“I got 12 pieces in right now,” Von admitted.
Von further elaborated that chewing gum helps him concentrate and stay focused. He explained, "If I have to do this and keep this moving... The rest of me is busy, my eyes locked in."
Theo Von's Journey to Sobriety
Theo Von has been open about his past struggles with alcohol, cocaine, and other substances. In a 2018 episode of his This Past Weekend podcast, he shared the story of his journey to sobriety. He mentioned a turning point in July 2016 after an all-night binge in New York City when he realized his voice was failing him.
“For the first time in my life, I sat down and listened to people tell stories which were my favorite thing to hear,” Von said. “I just wanted a different story, man. I wanted to be I wanted to be in a family and I wanted to feel loved, you know?"
That experience led him to attend AA meetings and find support within a community. He found comfort and understanding among people who had faced similar challenges.
Theo Von's Involvement with Vanderbilt Football
Beyond his personal story, Theo Von has also become involved with the Vanderbilt football program. He has developed friendships with coach Clark Lea and several players since moving to Nashville in 2020. Lea described Von as "a great friend" who brings "a great perspective and wisdom" to the team.
"Theo's become a great friend," Lea said on Sept. 11. "I appreciate his interests in our program, the friendships he's built... He really has a great perspective and wisdom that he brings and also just that sense of humor and that lightness."
Von even attended the Commodores' practice on September 10 and has been present at road games.
