UNAM Demands Immediate Release of Student Detained by Israel in Gaza Flotilla Incident

UNAM Demands Release of Student Arlín Medrano Guzmán Detained by Israel

The Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) is demanding the immediate release of Arlín Medrano Guzmán, a student who was detained by Israeli forces after the interception of a flotilla heading to Gaza. The university issued a statement condemning the actions and calling for her safe return.

UNAM Condemns Detention of Flotilla Participants

In its official statement, UNAM strongly condemned the boarding and detention of all individuals on board the Global Sumud Flotilla. This flotilla included six Mexican nationals, one of whom is Arlín Medrano Guzmán, a student of Public Administration. The university reiterated its commitment to protecting its students and ensuring their well-being.

The Facultad de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales (FCPyS), where Arlín Medrano Guzmán is a student, has also condemned the situation in Gaza, calling it a genocide and citing alleged crimes against humanity committed by Israel.

Demands for Arlín Medrano Guzmán's Well-being and Repatriation

The FCPyS at UNAM is demanding that Israel respect the physical and psychological integrity of Arlín Medrano Guzmán. They are also demanding her immediate release and repatriation in accordance with international public law. UNAM emphasizes its dedication to adhering to the principles of international law.

The university, in its statement on Thursday, October 2nd, asserted its position regarding the detention, underlining that Arlín Medrano Guzmán and five other Mexican citizens were part of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

UNAM's Actions and Communication with Authorities

UNAM is demanding the safe return of Arlín Medrano Guzmán and assures that her physical and psychological integrity, as well as that of the five other detained Mexican nationals, is being prioritized. The other detained Mexican citizens are: Sol González Eguía, Carlos Pérez Osorio, Diego Vázquez Galindo, Ernesto Ledesma Arronte, and Laura Alejandra Vélez Ruiz Gaitán.

The university confirmed that it is in close communication with the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE), Mexico's foreign ministry, to closely monitor and facilitate the return of Arlín Medrano Guzmán. UNAM also made a public appeal for a ceasefire in Gaza.
