Mascarita Sagrada gets pinfall win in eight-man tag opener
This weekend’s WWE & AAA Worlds Collide card from the Cox Pavilion at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, opened with remarks from Penta. After he started the show, we were introduced to tonight’s English commentary team: Konnan, Corey Graves, and JBL.
Multi-man tag action opened the card, as Laredo Kid, Octagon Jr., La Parka, and Mascarita Sagrada took on Joaquin Wilde, Cruz del Toro, Lince Dorado, and Mini Abismo Negro. The inclusion of Sagrada and Abismo Negro here was notable, as the previous Worlds Collide show earlier this year didn’t include Mini-Estrella talents.
Toro got a two-count early in the match after landing a Spanish Fly onto Laredo Kid. He tagged in Wilde for some LWO double-team action after. Sagrada got a spotlight against Abismo Negro, getting a hot tag halfway through the match.
Sagrada got another big reaction when he returned later on, taking out all four wrestlers from the opposing team, then going to the top rope and to the outside with a huge hurricanrana to Abismo Negro. A large focus was on him throughout the match, as you’ll see later on in this report.
Octagon Jr. and Del Toro had a fun exchange in the ring, trading blows in a fast-paced sequence. Del Toro draped Octagon Jr. from the top rope for a Superkick, then went flying across the ring with a Coast To Coast.
Wilde got Laredo Kid out of the ring. Dorado scored a Shooting Star Press onto Octagon Jr. and went for the pin, but had the fall broken up by Sagrada.
Late in the match there was a sequence where many wrestlers went flying out of the ring: Dorado went to the outside with a moonsault, Octagon Jr. came down with a crossbody, Del Toro hit a torneo, and Wilde did a slingshot dive.
Focus went back to the ring, where it was once again Abismo Negro and Sagrada battling it out. After landing a dropkick, Abismo Negro earned a roll-up pin for the win in 18 minutes. This match had some errors and went a little long, but overall delivered on its intention of being an action-packed opener to set the tone for the night.
Natalya earns Reina de Reinas title shot
#1 contendership for the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship was found next, as four-time champ Faby Apache took on WWE vet Natalya. Natalya has appeared on a few past AAA cards, including a three-way match for the aforementioned top women’s title at Triplemania XXXIII last month.
Action started to pick up near the five-minute mark, when Apache came off the top rope with a crossbody, then dropped Natalya with a head kick, earning her a two-count. Apache tried to wear down Natalya with an armbar and a guillotine choke, but she eventually escaped both holds, slamming her way out of the latter. This match had a clear focus on striking sequences, with the two women trading hard blows both on the feet and on the ground.
Natalya tried for an ankle lock, but Apache was able to reverse into an attempt of her own. Natalya attempted a discus forearm after escaping the hold, but instead ate a nasty-looking head kick from Apache.
Apache tried for a Sharpshooter, but Natalya prevented the Hart Dungeon classic from being done on her. The two traded roll-up pin attempts, a sequence which culminated with Natalya finding the three-count pinfall victory. Natalya has earned herself a future title shot against Flammer.
Backstage, Xavier Woods announced that recent attacks from Penta have injured him and caused him to withdraw from his tag title match tonight. Instead, Grayson Waller will take his place. It was alluded to that part of his absence from the match was due to his fear of clowns, thus causing him to withdraw from a match featuring Psycho Clown.
Psycho Clown & Pagano retain against Kofi & Waller, get attacked by Wyatt Sicks afterward
Tag gold was on the line next, as Pagano and Psycho Clown put their AAA World Tag Team Championships on the line against the short-notice team of Kofi Kingston and Grayson Waller.
Kingston found himself isolated by the champs halfway through the match. Psycho Clown was able to get a two-count after a split-legged moonsault out of the corner. Kingston got back into the fight thanks to interference from Waller, who attacked Psycho Clown while the referee wasn’t looking.
Psycho Clown found himself as the isolated wrestler for a few minutes. He was able to break free from Kingston and Waller briefly, but with Pagano taken off the ring apron just moments prior, he wasn’t able to tag out and thus had to remain in the match for longer.
Psycho Clown came off the top rope with a crossbody to Kingston, giving him the space to finally get Pagano back into the fight. Pagano took Waller out of the ring with a DDT, then put his focus back onto Kingston, delivering a huge Emerald Flowsion for a two-count.
Pagano and Psycho Clown both had risky-looking dives to the outside (Pagano basically landed on the top of his head, Clown narrowly avoided a nasty landing on the commentary table).
Psycho Clown went for the pin on Kingston back in the ring, but Waller was able to break up the attempt. Pagano got tagged back in and climbed to the top for a move, but was briefly distracted by Woods, who got onto the ring apron. This allowed Kingston to trip up Pagano in the ropes. Kingston delivered a Superplex, and then Waller, who had just tagged back in, connected with a top-rope elbow drop. Pagano kicked out at two.
As the referee was distracted by Woods once again, Psycho Clown whipped both Waller and Kingston with a belt. Psycho clown ripped off his mask, igniting Woods’ coulrophobia and causing him to run to the back.
Psycho Clown and Pagano did stereo Mexican Destroyers. Pagano dove to the outside onto Woods, then Psycho Clown put together a flashy punch and then a roll-up pin for the victory in just under 17 minutes. New Day had a numbers advantage, but not enough skill to take down the incumbent champs.
Pagano and Psycho Clown were expected to be interviewed in the ring afterward, but the segment was cut short by the Wyatt Sicks, who appeared on stage. The faction came to the ring and attacked the champs, both of whom were put through SlimJim™ tables. Looks like the Wyatts are out for more gold alongside the WWE tag belts they already hold.
Lola Vice and Mr. Iguana (and La Yesca) prevail over Judgement Day
Mixed tag action took place next, as AAA viral sensation Mr. Iguana teamed with NXT’s Lola Vice to take on the Judgement Day team of Finn Balor and Roxanne Perez.
A fair amount of attention was put on a bag Balor brought with him to the ring, which we presumed would include Demonito, his puppet to counter Mr. Iguana’s La Yesca. Judgement Day having Raquel Rodriguez at ringside helped the team early on, as she was able to throw Mr. Iguana onto the ring apron while the referee wasn’t looking at one point.
Balor’s Demonito puppet surprisingly appeared from under the ring during the match, being controlled by someone under the ring. Balor warned Demonito that it wasn’t safe to be near the ring. This distracted Balor and caused Mr. Iguana to get in control of the match.
Perez was able to connect with a springboard moonsault after raking the eyes of Vice while the referee wasn’t looking. Perez got distracted by Mr. Iguana’s La Yesca getting thrown into her hands during a top-rope exchange, giving Vice the chance to take her down to the mat.
Mr. Iguana picked up the bag Balor brought to the ring, expecting Demonito to be in there. After finding nothing in the bag, he turned around and found Balor behind him, holding Demonito. Balor, wielding Demonito, landed a Swingblade and then a basement dropkick. He climbed to the top to try for a Coup de Grace, but was tripped by Vice, who was on the ring apron. Mr. Iguana took down Balor with a Frankensteiner out of the corner.
Mr. Iguana threw Ya Lesca out of the ring to take out Demonito, then delivered a tope suicida onto Balor, leaving the women to close out the match in the ring. Vice escaped a Pop Rox from Perez. After briefly getting distracted by Rodriguez, Vice kicked out of a roll-up pin attempt. Vice then scored a spinning backfist to Perez, earning her a pinfall win in 12 minutes.
NXT Women’s Champion Jacy Jayne, who will face Vice at No Mercy later this month, was seen watching on during the post-match.
El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. survives hectic four-way to retain Latin American title
A fatal four-way match got the co-main event spot of the night, as El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. attempted to overcome the odds and defend his AAA Latin American Championship in a bout against JD McDonagh, Ethan Page, and Dragon Lee.
This match had a lightning-fast pace from the start, full of big moments. McDonagh flew off the ropes and to the outside with a big moonsault, Page for a near fall with a Codebreaker to Lee, and all four wrestlers exchanged kicks to the head in the ring at one point.
Lee had a fun showcase halfway through: He hit a double stomp off the top and onto both McDonagh and Page, who were both draped in the corner, gave Wagner Jr. a hurricanrana onto the floor, then hit McDonagh with a Liger Bomb for a near fall.
McDonagh also got a close pin with a Spanish Fly off the top rope, but Lee kicked out. The move was especially impressive as they both had to get over Wagner Jr., who was hanging out of the same corner they jumped off.
Lee caught McDonagh with a Mexican Destroyer. Page landed a cutter to Lee, but the follow-up pin attempt was broken by Wagner Jr., who came off the top with a Swanton Bomb onto them. Wagner Jr. scored a Wagner Driver onto McDonagh, hitting Page out of the ring in the process, paving the way to a clean pinfall victory to retain his title in just under 10 minutes.
This was a fast match and the finish felt slightly abrupt, but the impressive exchanges between these four have made it one of the stand-out bouts from the evening. Lee especially stood out in his performance here, personally.
Judgement Day, El Grande Americano help Dominik Mysterio dethrone Vikingo
The main event of the evening saw AAA Mega Champion El Hijo del Vikingo put his title on the line against WWE Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio. Despite Vikingo being the storyline babyface in this match, he wasn’t the one getting cheers here – that’s been the case more so in Mexico as of late, but it seemed to be the situation here simply because Mysterio is a red-hot name in WWE currently.
Vikingo went flying early, delivering a crisp tope suicida to the outside just two minutes into the bout. Mysterio had control of the bout once they went to ringside again a minute later, throwing Vikingo shoulder-first into steel steps.
Back in the ring, Mysterio delivered the Three Amigos, giving him a two-count. After knocking Vikingo out of the ring with a dropkick and flying over the ropes for a Swanton, Mysterio got another near fall.
Vikingo tried mounting a comeback but had a move reversed by Mysterio, who tossed him groin-first onto the top rope. He started to actually put things together at the 10-minute mark, coming off the top rope with a dropkick, then landing a clean Meteora in the corner for a two-count.
Vikingo came off the top for a move but was caught by Mysterio for a powerbomb. He tried to follow this up with a 619, but Vikingo was able to catch him in the ropes. Vikingo threw Mysterio to the mat face-first after a series of reversals, then scored a 450 Splash off the top rope. Surprisingly, this did not put away Mysterio.
It was at this point that Finn Balor and JD McDonagh of the Judgement Day appeared at ringside. McDonagh headbutted Vikingo as the referee was distracted, setting Mysterio up to land a Michinoku Driver. Vikingo was able to kick out at two.
Mysterio put on a mask and loaded it with a metal plate. But, immediately after doing this, he was floored with a superkick from Vikingo, which commentary said knocked the plate out of the mask. Dragon Lee and Rey Mysterio ran in at ringside to even the odds, using a steel chair to send Judgement Day retreating.
Vikingo scored a spinning kick to Mysterio, then his 630 Splash. He went for the pin, but the three-count was stopped by El Grande Americano, who dragged the referee out of the ring. A distracted Vikingo got hit with a 619 from Mysterio, then took a frogsplash off the top. Mysterio tried for the pin, but there was no referee in sight.
A new referee finally hit the ring, but the delayed count meant that Vikingo was able to kick out just before three. Vikingo scored a head kick and a Poisonrana to Mysterio. He then put his attention on Americano, attempting to unmask him. As he fought the unmasking attempt, Americano slid a metal disk to Mysterio, who loaded it into his mask.
Vikingo turned around and took a running headbutt from Mysterio, who had his mask loaded. Mysterio came off the top with a frogsplash, earning him a pinfall victory at 18 minutes. Dom Mysterio is your new AAA Mega Champion.
Rey Mysterio, who pledged earlier in the night that he would wrap the title around his son, Dom, if he won, returned to the ring. Rey initially tried to just hand the belt to Dom, but was ordered to do what he had promised he would do. After putting the belt around Dom’s waist, he was kicked out of the ring.
Dominik Mysterio celebrated in the ring with the Judgement Day and El Grande Americano as the show went off air.
