Honolulu Prepares for Massive Crowds at Sold-Out Fiji Tribute Concert

Everything You Need to Know About the Fiji Tribute Concert in Waikiki

Get ready for a massive celebration of the life and music of George "Fiji" Veikoso at the Fiji Tribute Concert this weekend at the Tom Moffat Waikiki Shell and Kapi'olani Park. Here's what you need to know about security, parking, and how to enjoy the show, even if you don't have a ticket.

Large Crowds and Security Measures

Organizers anticipate between 20,000 and 30,000 people attending the concert, honoring a "fallen hero" who influenced many artists. The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) and private security will be present to ensure safety and order. The Waikiki Shell has a capacity of 8,500, so a ticketed overflow section will be available at Kapi'olani Park with a live feed.

  • Ticket Required: You must have a ticket to enter the Waikiki Shell and the Kapi'olani Park ticketed area. No re-entry is allowed at the Shell.
  • Prohibited Items: Weapons of any kind, smoking & vaping, consuming alcohol within the park, unauthorized drones, and unauthorized commercial activity are prohibited.

Parking and Transportation

Concertgoers should anticipate extremely limited parking. Restrictions will be in place along portions of Monsarrat, Kapahulu, and Le'ahi avenues. Consider alternative transportation options.

  • Off-site Parking: Parking may be available at Waikiki and Jefferson Elementary schools. Note that Kapiolani Community College is NOT a parking site.
  • Shuttle Service: Shuttle services will run from 2 to 6 p.m. and 9 to 11 p.m. from the Neal S. Blaisdell Center to the Shell.
  • Parking Restrictions: "No Parking" restrictions will be in effect from 11 p.m. Friday through 11 p.m. Saturday on specific streets.

Event Details and How to Watch

Gates open at 4 p.m. at the Shell, with the show starting at 5 p.m. The park viewing areas will open at noon for ticketed attendees. If you can't make it in person, you can still enjoy the concert.

  • Live Stream: The concert will be streamed for free on HawaiiNewsNow.com and Fiji’s YouTube Channel (youtube.com/@FijiTheArtist). No ticket or subscription is required to watch online.
  • Street Closures: Paki Avenue will be closed (eastbound) from Kapahulu Avenue to Kalakaua Avenue and Kalakaua Avenue to Monsarrat Avenue starting at 5 p.m.

City and Police Preparedness

The city and HPD are coordinating to manage the large crowd and potential traffic congestion. They are comparing the event to the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational in terms of logistical challenges. Increased staffing is planned in anticipation of other events, like the MegaBon at Leeward Community College and a University of Hawaii football game.

“Our top priority is ensuring everyone can enjoy the concert safely,” said HPD Major Events Division Maj. Cliff Ramson. “We’ve been coordinating with the city, first responders and event organizers for weeks in preparation for this large gathering. We ask the public to kokua by following instructions and looking out for one another.”
