No. 5 Montana Hosts No. 16 North Dakota in Early Season Showdown
The No. 5 Montana Grizzlies are set to face a significant early-season test as they host the No. 16 North Dakota Fighting Hawks this weekend in Missoula. This top-20 clash pits two strong programs against each other in a non-conference rematch.
A Chance for Griz Revenge
North Dakota, formerly a Big Sky Conference member, defeated Montana last year after a dominant second-half performance. This game gives the Griz a rare opportunity for revenge against a non-conference opponent they recently faced. As UM running back Eli Gillman stated, "It's nice going in with a little chip on your shoulder for sure."
Recent History and Key Stats
The Fighting Hawks have won the last two meetings, including a win in 2018. However, the last time these teams met in Missoula, in 2017, the Griz emerged victorious with a score of 41-17. Saturday's game is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on Scripps Sports.
North Dakota's Offensive Prowess
North Dakota opened their season by nearly upsetting a ranked Kansas State team, losing a close contest 38-35. They followed that with a dominant 50-20 victory over Portland State. Under new coach Eric Schmidt, the Hawks offense has been dynamic, largely due to the performance of sophomore quarterback Jerry Kaminski. According to UM head coach Bobby Hauck, "[Kaminski] looks composed. He's run the ball well. He's been good in the RPO game in particular."
Griz Defense Prepares for the Challenge
While North Dakota has been putting up significant yards and points, they have struggled with pressure, allowing seven sacks already this season. Montana cornerback Kenzel Lawler emphasized the need for increased preparation: "I think that it means that we just have to prepare that much more for our opponent. I think that we're going to have to come together as one unit and be able to show up when it matters most."
